Doktor (Abk. Dr.) bezeichnet den höchsten akademischen Grad.
Der akademische Doktorgrad (das Doktorat) wird durch die Promotion an einer Hochschule mit Promotionsrecht erworben. Eine abgeschlossene Promotion gilt als Nachweis der Fähigkeit zur eigenständigen wissenschaftlichen Arbeit.
